Keep Calm and Carry On.

equine-therapy-victoriaEquine Assisted Learning sessions focus on helping people stay grounded, manage negative feelings and emotions and encourage positive behaviours.  In practice, many of the people  we work with use the sessions to explore their  personal strategies for staying calm.

Being calm around horses is essential because they are highly sensitive animals.  They respond  to human energy, body language, and emotional states.   As prey animals, horses rely on their instincts to detect risk and threat.  They may perceive a tense or upset person as a potential danger.  Calmness signals safety,  which helps build trust and builds cooperative relationships.

When clients are composed, our horses are more likely to mirror them, leading to smoother, more productive interactions.  A calm presence allows for clearer communication, enabling the horse to focus and respond without confusion or fear.  It’s always rewarding to hear how our clients take these insights away with them and apply them to real life situations – at school, at home and even at work.  We get a lot of positive feedback as to how the ‘shadow’ of a session can last over a couple of weeks as people draw on the feelings they had with the horses and how they apply them to their lives.

Ultimately, calmness is not just a personality trait—it’s a skill that can be cultivated.  Through mindfulness, breathing techniques, and intentional awareness, anyone working with horses can develop the emotional steadiness that horses instinctively respect and respond to.
