Horses Can Help Us Get Rid of Bitterness and Grudges

equine therapy in australiaBearing grudges is a common and destructive issue. Many people carry long standing grudges against others who were once friends, colleagues or even family members. Often those grudges are so long standing that people forget why they bore the grudge in the first place.

It’s actually easier to carry on with the real or perceived grudge than to work out what caused it or to do something about it. As author and educationalist Sean Covey said

‘The past is just that, past. Learn what went wrong and why. Make amends if you need to. Then drop it and move on.’

As a rule, horses don’t bear grudges. They don’t carry long running hostility. They do remember if people treat them badly but are likely to react more through fear than hostility. As they live in the moment, they do not dwell on what happened to them yesterday or last year. They react to situations in the here and now and then get back to ‘grazing’. They have a non-judgemental and accepting nature that doesn’t care what you did or who you  did it to.

Carrying a grudge around is like having  a knapsack full of rocks on your back. You’re the one carrying it. Working with the accepting nature of horses can let you take that knapsack off. The horse will even help you carry it, because they will want to work with you to help you achieve your goals. Treat them right and they will treat you right. Buddha said,

‘Holding onto anger is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die’.

If you’ve been harboring a long-standing grudge against someone, then try sharing it with a horse and feel the lightness that comes when that knapsack lifts off your back. If you want to know more about equine therapy please give Annie a call on 0411 549562.
